Health Benefits of Leeks and Cardiovascular Health

Although, leeks are less popular than onion and garlic as a heart food but they can promote the heart health significantly. Given below are some important points on how leeks are responsible for healthy heart.

Kaempferol and Its Benefits

Kaempferol provides significant benefits to heart. This flavonoid protects heart from oxidative damage and helps to relax the blood vessels. Kaempferol lowers the production of the natural chemical called Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) which is responsible for reducing the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential for blood vessels to relax and by promoting nitric oxide production, kaempferol keeps the blood vessels healthy and thus promotes the cardiovascular health.

Anti-inflammatory Benefits

Inflammation and chronic inflammation are bad for the heart health. Anti-inflammatory properties of leeks especially Vitamin K plays important role in the reduction of the inflammation. Also, Vitamin K promotes healthy blood clotting and reduces calcification of the arteries. Unwanted calcification can lead to many cardiovascular disease. In addition to Vitamin K- Vitamin B6 is also a very good vitamin for anti-inflammation.

Reduced Homocysteine Levels

A non-protein amino acid called homocysteine is associated with cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine build up in the blood can be dangerous for the heart. High levels of homocysteine in the blood lead to cardiovascular disease. Folic acid or folate in the leeks is very important to keep the homocysteine levels down and in this way folate prevents cardiovascular disease.

Anti-oxidant Benefits

Leeks are extraordinary source of anti-oxidant plant compounds, vitamins and minerals. These nutrients are responsible for protecting heart from oxidative damage. Oxidative damage of the cells is one of the major reasons for cardiovascular disease. By protecting heart from free radical damages antioxidant properties of leeks reduce the chances of developing cardiovascular disease and at the same time promote heart health as well.

Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Fiber in the leeks plays significant part in the reduction of cholesterol levels. Fiber promotes easy bowel movements and helps to flush out extra cholesterol out of the body. In addition, fiber also reduces the production of the cholesterol in the liver.
